I find Weir a bit painful singing Jerry's tunes, and even back in the 90's
and late 80's when they pulled out some great old Pig tunes... Bob just had
no handle on them... No sole, that's the word I was looking for.... But
he's still our great friend Bob who belted out some great tunes with
Jerry...

Yep. Bobby isn't a good band leader, but his ego says otherwise.

I hated Ratdog in the 90's after the 2001 tour I started liking them.
Actually I never made it all the way through a show in the 90's.

The answer to that is no. I've seen Ratdog on several occasions in
several venues and have never failed to have an enjoyable time and a
worthwhile musical experience.

It is a different experience from seeing the Grateful Dead or the Dead
or PLQ in its various incarnations, but that is the idea, isn't it?

I for one love the idea that Bob and the boys are out there keeping the
flame burning and I would be bummed if I couldn't see someone
performing Jerry's songs live now that he isn't here to do it himself.
The evil that Jerry did with the Persian lives long after him on this
board, why should the good be interred with his bones, or dumped in the
Ganges with his ashes or whatever.

A day is coming where you won't be able to drive 9 hours or 90 hours
and still see Dead tunes perfomed by original band members. Then you'll
wish you hadn't ragged on Bob so much, or given Phil shit for spending
time with his family -- although I'm happy he's back on the road as
well.

Painful? Not at all. But all post Garcia, GD related projects by
remaining members involving live shows with the classic repertoire are
severely lacking.
Weir, at least, seems to breeze by year after year while Lesh and Hart
are so overly dramatic in presentation they nearly reach ludicrous
speed.

Absolutely. And not just Ratdog, I think Phil does a great Franklins &
Row Jimmy. Now if we could just get someone to do TLEO I could rest
easy as a first setter.

I enjoy Ratdog, but last time I saw them was in a bar about 10 minutes
from my house. 2004, I think. 9 hours is a real stretch! I'm sure
Booby has off nights, but every time I've seen him he's been in good
form.

Nah, I don't find 'em painful. The couple shows I've seen left me
feeling that they could have done a lot more with the music (both GD
songs and originals). Too reserved. Too...predictable.

That being said, I've got a few older RD shows in my collection that I
really enjoy listening to from time to time.

Would I go see 'em again? Maybe...as long as they were playing
somewhere convenient and I had the cash.

First time I saw them was Oklahoma 2001, after flying out there from
Oakland, and being miserable in the humidity and 100-degree weather.
They played a two hour+ set of absolute lounge tunes! Their version of
Terrapin was downright painful to listen to.

Saw them again open for Phil at Redrocks a year later, and they were
fantastic! I don't know how they do it...they did the same thing during
the New Year's run in 2001...brilliant one night, the next night, crap.

really, any Grateful Dead magic that was left died about 10 years ago.

I went to the Dead family reunion at Alpine Valley 2002-08-03&04, and
that seemed nicely magical. I met lots of really nice people from all
over the country, and came home with lots of funny stories. There was
even a rainbow! Maybe it was the fungus, but I had a good time. The
music was great too! Robert Hunter was an especially nice treat.
Otherwise post-Garcia is just good music with tiny little bits of
magic. The family reunion was great though!

I should say that catching Phil and Friends kick off the Here Comes
Sunshine Tour Spring 2001 with my nephew was pretty magical. Sure I was
in good spirits and the music pleasantly suprised me.

I love RatDog.

They don't play enough shows in the Bay Area.

But they don't get much respect in the Bay Area (if you count ticket sales
as a sign of respect) so I suppose that's why we don't get more shows
here.

I love RatDog enough that if there is a conflict NYE, I'll see RatDog over
Phil & Friends.

I hope there's no conflict - I've loved almost every project Phil's done
post-95, too.

Seen them eight times - 4 with Robin Sylvester on bass, four the year
before.
Love 'em.
Okay, they're not perfect but I'd take them over 94 or 95 Dead.
Songs, passion and jamming. More organic feeling than Phil can be
sometimes.
I'm not about to start collecting show recordings but a damn good night
out. And, yes, I'd drive 9 hours.

Like I said, this was a couple o' years ago. That was a GREAT show!
Last year Barbara's mother went into the hospital so we gave away our
tixs as miracle tixs outside 4th an' B an' that night as it turned out,
Bobby didn't come out for the 2nd set. I had heard he was "sick",
dunno if that was code for "falling down drunk" or not. I have read
here on RMGD that they have been smokin' hot lately, but I can
personally neither confirm nor deny. ;D
